THE HISTORY OF THE 1927 McEVOY

Home

This is one of very few McEvoy motorcycles known to be in existence. It is of particular historical interest because it was the last of these machines to be owned by its builder, the late Michael McEvoy. This bikes log book and registration are original with only two owners registered; Michael McEvoy and John Stears. Its restoration was started by Michael McEvoy and John Stears but completed by John Stears on Michael McEvoys sudden death shortly after work on the restoration had began. John Stears was two-time Academy Award winning special effects director who was well known for his mechanical effects in the James Bond films and the Star Wars Movie. In fact he was the creator of the James Bond Aston Martin and the light sabers, R2D2 droid and Luke Skywalker's sand speeder in Star Wars to name but a few of his creations, that earned him two Hollywood Oscars. John Sadly also passed away in 1999 and this McEvoy was his last vintage motorcycle, but followed a legacy of British bikes that he had owned, which included a 1936 Brough Superior SS 100, three Ariel Square Fours and four Scotts.

Shortly after restoration John was stopped by traffic police for riding a machine without a speedometer and lights, it took the logbook and its vintage history to prove to the police that this was not a new motorcycle but in its original condition as built in 1927. Such is the condition of this remarkable machine following its rebuild. John also used all of his mechanical special effects and model building skills to build a replica 1920's sports sidecar on a genuine vintage chassis for the bike.

The McEvoy was a contemporary racing motorcycle of the Brough Superior and Zenith. The three marques were very much at the for front of sprint racing in Europe and circuit racing at Brooklands during the 1920's. Michael McEvoy himself was the top carburation and supercharger specialist of his era as well as an accomplished motorcycle builder. G.W Patchett was probably the most successful rider of McEvoys during the 1920's, riding the racing versions this superb specimen.
